The Sidney Prize, the Addison Brown Prize and the Neilma Sidney Prize
The Sydney Prize recognizes excellence in journalism that illuminates, inspires or informs the public. Open to writers working both traditional and new digital formats alike, nominations for this prize must be submitted by the last day of every month and winners announced on the second Wednesday.
The Sidney Hillman Foundation was established in 1950 and is dedicated to honoring and supporting journalists, writers and public figures who pursue investigative reporting and deep storytelling for the common good. The Sidney Hillman Foundation promotes work that upholds Sidney Hillman’s values: integrity, compassion and respect for human dignity.
Overland’s Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize seeks moving, powerful and original writing inspired by travel themes. Open to writers both nationally and internationally at any stage in their writing careers. The winner receives $5,000 AUD while their story will also be published in Overland magazine in autumn 2024 issue; two runners-up each will receive $750. Online publication of all winning stories as well as runners-up stories will occur simultaneously with autumn issue release date.
Supported by the Malcolm Robertson Foundation and named after our late colleague Neilma Sidney, Australia’s premier short fiction prize is named in her honour. Open to stories up to 3000 words long that explore travel in all its forms as well as its profound effect on people and cultures across Australia and beyond, the Neilma Sidney Prize offers writers an opportunity to tell a tale that will reach and engage readers across Australia and beyond.
The Addison Brown Prize was established in 1855 through a bequest by Sir Addison Brown, LL.B. as an undergraduate essay award to recognize those that best met his rigorous standard for scholarship and writing quality during an academic year. Today this prize is open to students studying any field other than law alone – students may submit papers themselves or instructors can nominate papers they worked under for consideration during that year.
The Sidney Salmon Derby boasts over $30,000 in cash and merchandise prizes, making it one of the biggest annual competitions on the NSW coast. Open to Australian residents over 16, this competition provides an ideal way to spend quality time on the water with friends, family and colleagues alike.
