Prince William joined celebrities as he strolled the green carpet at Singapore’s Mediacorp Theatre to attend the Earthshot Prize awards ceremony on Tuesday. He noted how 15 winners offered solutions ranging from solar dryers that help combat food waste to cleaner batteries for electric car batteries to demonstrate “hope does remain” despite global warming’s devastating impacts on Earth.

Gunnlaugur Erlendsson was one of the winners announced at this event; his company offers eco-friendly tyres for electric vehicles that help lower carbon emissions. Erlendsson thanked Prince Harry for his dedication in improving our planet – something which he considered essential due to climate change already having devastating impacts on economies and leading to mass migration around the globe.

Professor Mahbubani created the Singapore Prize in April 2014 through a published opinion column advocating its establishment and soliciting donations of cash prizes from Singapore philanthropists for writing about Singapore history books. An anonymous donor soon responded with a donation of S$500,000 towards an endowment fund for supporting it.

Professor Mahbubani, a historian, established this prize to foster writing and publishing about Singapore’s past. He expressed his delight that such generous donors have supported it.

He also appreciated that the prize has evolved beyond its strictly literary focus and expanded to incorporate non-fiction work with strong historical aspects – one shortlisted book being Sembawang by Jeremy Tiang (2019, available here). Sembawang follows an extended family through leftist political movements and detentions during the 1950s.
