Data collection and analysis is vitally important to understanding what works and doesn’t work, the impact on patients, as well as opportunities for improvement. Doing this enables us to make better decisions, identify areas for development and track trends quickly so we can act effectively and quickly when required.
In addition to our standard data collection efforts, CDC is helping states create local systems for data management and reporting. These will allow data to be collected more frequently while also serving as an oversight mechanism and comparison mechanism between state-specific information and best practices; ultimately increasing state capacity to quickly address public health threats.
To assist this effort, CDC is currently developing new data management and analysis tools that state health departments can use when conducting death investigations. These free tools will include protocols for collecting mortality/mortality data as well as an electronic platform to share this information among participants in nine states currently taking part.
CDC’s new funding will aim to strengthen surveillance of SUID and SDY by ensuring all cases are identified, responses are minimized and timely data entry completed. This goal can be met through partnerships with existing State Epidemiology Laboratory Programs as well as by including an additional prevention component into surveillance plans.
Data collected will be used to enhance quality of care, increase reporting of infant sleep disorders (SUID and SDY), and speed up report submission timelines. Ultimately, the goal is to reduce cases and deaths related to infant sleep disorders. The results of this research will be disseminated to a wide audience, such as health professionals and caregivers, parents, policymakers and others who have an interest in infant sleep disorders. Furthermore, this work will serve to inform future intervention efforts in this area. CRADA will enable the CDC to share its data with other federal agencies, thus fostering multidisciplinary efforts and encouraging collaboration within this field. Specific implementation plans for this project will be created through collaboration with its Office of Child and Maternal Health as well as other federal partners.
