The HK Prize for Excellence in Research by Young Fellows of the Academy
Hong Kong University of Science and Technology researchers have received a $200,000 prize for creating an algorithm to predict when people will die. Their system takes into account factors like DNA, blood pressure and heart rate to assess risk for death; then compares this data against an available database to pinpoint likely causes of mortality. It’s currently being tested on terminal illness patients so doctors can more quickly diagnose patients more accurately.
The Hong Kong Prize consists of an engraved gold medal awarded for excellence in research by young Fellows of the Academy on subjects relevant to clinical practice or medical research, published after 1 January 2020 and receiving no earlier than one submission date for consideration.
